Falls are a common cause of spinal cord injuries

When people think of a slip-and-fall, they may not at first realize how serious these types of accidents can be. After all, in many cases, a slip-and-fall could mean a few bruises or, in the worst case, a broken bone.

However, in some cases, even a fall from a short height or no height all can leave a person disabled. This is because, should one's vertebrae, or back bones, get broken, it could also lead to a spinal cord injury.

As we have discussed before, a spinal cord injury can cause paralysis or other significant problems with mobility.

Falls are in fact the second-most common cause of spinal cord injuries, with motor vehicle accidents being far and away the most common cause. On the whole, 13 percent of spinal cord injuries are related to falls. Unfortunately, people over 65 are particularly prone to suffering from spinal cord injuries due to slips and falls.

Of course, many people of this age still have several years of their careers ahead of them. Moreover, after spinal cord injuries, victims will likely require extensive medical care, as well as ongoing rehabilitation expenses.

No matter their ages, people who go to shops and other businesses in the Northeast Wisconsin area have every right to expect that the physical premises will be safe for them.

After all, business owners have every ability to make sure that parking lots, walkways and the like are clear of obstructions and safe for all customers to use.

Should a Northeast Wisconsin resident suffer a spinal cord injury or other type of injury in a slip-and-fall on someone else's property, they may be able to get compensation with the help of a slip-and-fall accident injury law firm.
