Wisconsin bicyclist killed in hit-and-run accident

An 18-year-old bicyclist died shortly after being run down by a driver of a motor vehicle. The driver of the motor vehicle, a 71-year-old man, left the scene of the accident after hitting the young man and leaving him in a ditch and unresponsive.

Fortunately, police were later able to track down the driver involved in this fatal car accident. Police arrested the man and plan to work with area prosecutors to formally charge him with a crime in connection with his leaving the scene.

Although this tragedy happened further south in Wisconsin than the Green Bay and Manitowoc areas, it still illustrates a couple of important lessons for those in Northeast Wisconsin who have the misfortune of being victims in bicycle accidents.

The first is that bicyclists have every right to be on the road in this state and deserve the same respect as those who are driving cars and other motor vehicles. Drivers have a duty to be on the lookout for bicyclists and must be aware that bicyclists will in all likelihood be traveling at a slower speed than other vehicles. If they fail in these obligations and cause an accident, then they can be held responsible.

Thankfully, in this case, the would-be hit-and-run driver was ultimately tracked down and can now face both face criminal penalties and civil responsibility for this accident. However, there are many bicycle and pedestrian accidents in this state in which the driver responsible never gets found. Victims may still be able to recover compensation in these sorts of cases, but it may take the assistance of Northeast Wisconsin car accident injury attorneys in order to do so.
