Steps to take after a car accident: Part 1

Car accidents are a frequent occurrence on the roads of Northeast Wisconsin and nearby communities. Though it is not uncommon to see fender benders where the involved parties are exchanging information and looking over their vehicles for damage, many car accident victims are not so fortunate. A sad reality of car accidents is people get hurt and lose their lives. Those who suffer serious injuries may end up with long-term/permanent damage to their bodies and become unable to maintain and enjoy the quality of life they had before the incident.

As a novice driver, you might not realize how easy and unexpectedly collisions can happen. Whether or not you have been in a car accident before, we cannot stress the importance of getting medical attention afterward and taking proper action in the aftermath to prevent issues with personal injury claims and car accident settlements. Here are some pointers to consider.

The seriousness of injuries

A significant component of any car accident personal injury claim involves the victim’s injuries. Car accident victims with severe injuries typically receive more than those who have minor and non-life-threatening trauma. The severity of their injuries causes them to have more pain and suffering. Common motor vehicle accident injuries that can cause permanent damage and require lifelong medical care include traumatic brain damage, burns, broken and fractured bones, organ ruptures, internal hemorrhaging, and spinal cord trauma.

Medical treatment after the collision

After a car crash, your actions matter. You might feel normal and ready to go on about your business, but it is a good idea to let emergency responders check you for injuries and for you to follow up with a medical provider for a thorough health evaluation to rule out unobvious/developing trauma. Delays in receiving medical care can indicate to your insurer that your injuries are not as traumatic or severe as you claim. You must also follow all treatment recommendations. Failure to do so could result in a less-than-desirable settlement amount.

Your recollection of the event

Before making a decision on accident claims, insurers and investigators need to know what happened. It is important that you watch what you say. Do not admit fault to anyone. If you must speak with your insurer, make sure your statement is accurate.
