Steps if you are in an accident with an uninsured driver

On Behalf of | Mar 22, 2018 | Blog |

Wisconsin sees its fair share of dangerous car accidents on its roadways. In 2016 alone, over 129,000 crashes took place, according to the state’s Department of Transportation

There are things you should do after every accident. However, things become messier when one of the drivers lacks auto insurance. This is particularly frustrating if the uninsured driver is the one at fault, and you may not know how to handle the situation at the scene. Here are key steps to take following an auto accident with an uninsured driver.

Contact the police

You should get the police to come out to the scene of the accident no matter what. However, an official police report becomes even more valuable when the other driver does not have insurance. The report helps clear up certain hazy details and will help immensely during your claims process.

Get the other driver’s contact information

Normally, you would exchange insurance information with the other driver. In this case, you still want to get the person’s phone number, so you can contact him or her if needed. You should also take notes about the vehicle, such as license plate number and type of car.

See a doctor

You want to ensure you sustained no injuries following a crash. Ordinarily, the other driver’s insurance would cover your medical bills. Without it, you will be dependent on your own policy coming through for you.

Call your insurer

You want to contact your insurance agent shortly after the incident. Your insurer will help make sure you get the most out of your benefits when an uninsured driver is at play. Many insurance plans come with uninsured driver protection, so if you want new insurance, then you should make sure you get a policy with that addition. It may be an extra fee, but if you find yourself in this situation, then you will be thankful you have it.
